CSR makes two GPS acquisitions UPDATE

01.15.07 (4:12 am)   [edit]
CSR PLC, the UK Bluetooth chip company, has made two acquisitions to boost its capabilities in global positioning systems (GPS), the technology underpinning satellite navigation gadgets.

In a statement, the group said it has agreed to buy Cambridge Positioning Systems Ltd for 35 mln usd.

It will also acquire NordNav Technologies AB for at least 40 mln usd, with further payments of up to 35 mln due usd, depending on the performance of the Swedish group.

Chief executive John Scarisbrick said adding the two companies' designs to its own Bluetooth chips will allow the likes of Nokia (nyse: NOK - news - people ) and Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people )Ericsson (nasdaq: ERIC - news - people ) to add GPS to their handsets for an incremental cost of just 1 usd.

Costing between 5-10 usd, current mobile phone GPS chips have proved too costly to integrate into mass-market handsets, Scarisbrick told reporters on a conference call.

'We know the handset makers are enthusiastic about GPS at a lower price point, and I'm confident we'll see a significant increase in the number of handset featuring GPS in the next few years,' he said.

The takeovers, which significantly broaden CSR's product offering, come less than a month after the the group's Bluetooth chips came under legal attack in the US.

In late December, Washington Research Institute filed a lawsuit against three of the world's largest handset manufacturers, alleging Bluetooth developed by CSR violated four US patents.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology allowing the wireless exchange of data between mobile phones, computers, headsets and other devices.

CSR's first combined Bluetooth and GPS chips will be shipped to handset makers in the first half of this year, and the two acquisitions will acquisitions will be earnings-enhancing in 2008, the company said. Source: http://www.forbes.com/technol...
